[Ross Mansfield takes a diverse professional background including finance, IT, marketing and UI/UX design and folds this into an artistic practice exploring myth, technology, and the socio-cultural fabric that connects the two. Past works range from an electro-mechanical device that tracked artificial satellites for the purpose of generating Astrology type fortunes to a Hamsa sculpture that translated the world before it through a primitive eye.]

Description

[Visualized Conversation is an art installation using a series of wireless DigiMesh/XBee connected "hives" to simulate the transmission of ideas through conversation. Each hive is equipped with a microphone, microcontroller, and led array. A particular hive translates a local noise to a unique color and shares this "color idea" with a subset of its fellow hives. In turn the receiving hive repeats/flashes the "color idea" in the originating hue before passing it on to a subset of fellow hives. As each hive listens and shares its own uniquely hued "color idea" as well as repeating "color ideas" shared with it, a complex and changing pattern of lights rotates through the entire network. Viewers can see one "color idea" pass through network in a quiet environment or the rapid transmission of many ideas through a noisy environment. As XBees use a low-powered radio signal, the interior range is roughly 100ft allowing the configuration of the network to vary in concentration and sparsity to best work in the space. An outlying hive could only be within range of a very few fellow hives, thus limiting the transmission of its "color ideas". In this way Visualized Conversation provides a colorful representation of the complexity of conversational networks.]
